Solar Feed-In Tariff Rates in Australia (2026)

A solar feed-in tariff (FiT) is the rate your energy retailer pays you for excess electricity your rooftop solar system exports back to the grid. When your solar panels generate more power than your household uses, the surplus flows into the network and you receive a credit on your electricity bill at the agreed feed-in tariff rate, measured in c/kWh.

Feed-in tariff rates vary significantly across Australia. Some states set a regulated minimum rate, while others leave pricing entirely to energy retailers. The rate you receive depends on your state, your retailer, and the type of plan you’re on. Comparing plans is the most effective way to maximise the return on your solar investment.

How feed-in tariffs vary across Australia

Each Australian state and territory has its own regulatory framework for solar feed-in tariffs. In Victoria, the Essential Services Commission (ESC) sets a minimum rate that all retailers must offer. In New South Wales, there is no mandated minimum — rates are set entirely by the market. Queensland, South Australia, and the ACT each have their own regulatory bodies that publish benchmark or reference rates.

Western Australia operates differently again. Most residential solar customers in WA are on Synergy’s Renewable Energy Buyback Scheme (REBS), which pays a set rate for exported energy. Unlike eastern states, WA does not participate in the National Electricity Market.

Regardless of your state, the feed-in tariff is only one part of the picture. A plan with a slightly lower feed-in rate but significantly cheaper usage charges could save you more overall. Always compare the total plan cost, not just the FiT rate in isolation.
