How EnergyPlans.com.au makes money

We believe in being upfront about how we earn revenue. This page explains our business model so you can use our comparison tools with confidence.

    How we make money

We track 6,407 plans from 27 retailers using public Consumer Data Right data. That is how we can publish the cheapest plan in your zone even when it is not one we can sign you up to. Switching through EnergyPlans is handled by our commercial partner, whose panel is smaller than the market we track, and we are paid a commission when you switch. The cheapest plan we publish may not be available through us, and you can always go direct to the retailer. The Australian Government’s free comparison sites, Energy Made Easy and Victorian Energy Compare, list every plan available in your area.

The plans we track vs the plans we can switch you to

These are two different things, and the difference matters when you read our figures.

    Plans we track

6,407 plans from 27 retailers, sourced from the public Consumer Data Right (CDR) feeds that every energy retailer must publish. This is the full set we measure the reference price against, so the cheapest plan we publish for your zone is a genuine market floor — even when it is a plan we cannot sign you up to.

Plans we can switch you to

When you use "Compare plans" you are handed to our commercial partner, whose panel is a smaller set of retailers than the market we track. We are paid a commission when you switch through them. The cheapest plan we publish may not be on that panel, so you can always go direct to the retailer instead.

    Our commission model

EnergyPlans.com.au may receive a commission when you switch to an electricity or gas plan through our comparison partner. This is how we fund the operation of the website, including our research, data analysis, and comparison tools.

The commission does not change the price you pay. You pay the same rate whether you switch through our site or go directly to the retailer.

    What this means for you

    • 1Our comparison service is free for you to use. You do not pay us anything.
    • 2We may not compare every plan available in the market. The plans shown through our comparison partner are limited to those available through that service.
    • 3Our editorial content, benchmark data, state reports, and pricing analysis are produced independently and are not influenced by commercial relationships.
    • 4You should always read the plan details, including the Basic Plan Information Document (BPID) or Energy Price Fact Sheet, before switching.

    Our comparison partner

EnergyPlans.com.au is independently owned and operated by founder James Baker. No energy retailer holds any stake in EnergyPlans.com.au, and no retailer or partner influences our benchmark data, plan rankings, or editorial content.

When you use 'Compare Plans,' you're handed to our comparison partner, Compare & Connect (operated by Residential Connections Pty Ltd), who run the plan comparison and switching process for retailers on their panel. Compare & Connect is owned by Origin Energy Limited. Origin's plans sit on their panel alongside other retailers', and results are ranked by price, not by ownership or commission. This ownership sits with our partner, not with EnergyPlans.com.au.

We clearly label all links that lead to our comparison partner so you always know when you are leaving our editorial content and entering a commercial comparison service.

    Our independence commitment

Our state reports, pricing analyses, suburb data, and editorial guides are produced independently. Commercial relationships do not determine which retailers appear in our data or how we present pricing information. Our methodology is documented publicly.
