Electricity Bill Calculator
Enter your state, daily usage, and solar status to estimate your annual electricity bill and compare against AER benchmarks.
How the calculator works
Enter your details
Select your state, enter your average daily electricity usage in kWh (found on your bill), and tell us whether you have solar.
Get your estimate
We calculate your estimated annual bill using the average usage rate and daily supply charge for your state, including solar feed-in credits if applicable.
Compare against benchmarks
We compare your estimate against the AER reference price for your state, so you can see where your bill sits relative to the market.
Average electricity rates by state (2026)
Electricity prices vary significantly across Australian states. South Australia consistently has the highest average rates, while the ACT and Tasmania tend to be lower. These figures are averages. Your actual rate depends on your retailer and plan.

|---|---|---|---|
| NSW | 28.5c | $1.05 | $1,726 |
| VIC | 27.5c | $1 | $1,469 |
| QLD | 26.8c | $0.98 | $1,589 |
| SA | 35.2c | $1.1 | $2,120 |

Tips to reduce your electricity bill
- Compare electricity plans at least once a year. Rates change and better deals become available.
- Check whether your current plan is above or below the AER reference price for your state.
- If you have solar, ensure you are on a plan with a competitive feed-in tariff.
- Consider a time-of-use tariff if you can shift usage to off-peak periods.
- Households with electric vehicles or battery storage may benefit from specialised plans.
- Avoid plans with exit fees unless the rate is significantly cheaper. You want flexibility to switch.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this electricity bill calculator?
This calculator provides an estimate based on average state rates and your input usage. Actual bills depend on your specific plan, distributor, tariff structure, and any applicable discounts. Use it as a guide, then compare actual plans to get a precise quote.
How do I find my daily electricity usage?
Your daily electricity usage in kWh is shown on your electricity bill, usually as a total or daily average. Divide the total kWh by the number of days in the billing period to get your daily average. Most Australian households use between 15 and 20 kWh per day.
What is the AER reference price?
The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) sets a reference price (also called the default market offer) for each state. It acts as a benchmark. Plans priced above the reference price are considered expensive, while plans below represent a discount.
How does having solar affect my electricity bill?
If you have rooftop solar, excess electricity your system exports to the grid earns you a solar feed-in tariff credit. This credit reduces your bill. The calculator uses a typical Australian solar feed-in tariff of 8c/kWh and estimates export from a standard 6.6kW system.
How much could I reduce my bill by switching electricity plans?
Based on AER data, the difference between a standing offer and the cheapest market offer is typically 10 to 25% of the annual bill. The exact difference depends on your current plan, usage, and state. Use our comparison tool to see competitive plans available to you.
What is a daily supply charge?
The daily supply charge (sometimes called a service to property charge) is a fixed daily fee for being connected to the electricity network, regardless of how much electricity you use. It typically ranges from 90c to $1.20 per day depending on your state and distributor.
How we calculate these estimates
This calculator uses average state rates and your input values to produce an indicative estimate.
Estimated costs can vary by usage, tariff type, retailer, distributor, and address. Both supply charges (the daily fixed cost of being connected) and usage rates (c/kWh) affect your total bill. Solar feed-in tariffs vary by retailer and plan. Always review plan details, fees, and conditions before switching.
