Origin Energy new connections when you move

Origin splits the job in two. A move is for a home that already has a meter and wiring: the account is opened and the power is turned on. A new connection is for a property that has never had supply, such as a new build, and that needs a meter or a first connection to the network.

Those two jobs are priced differently. Origin says moving fees are set by the distributor and appear on the bill, and that the exact fee is shown when you book the move online. We have not copied a dollar figure onto this page.

Origin Energy sells residential electricity in NSW, VIC, QLD, SA and the ACT. See Origin Energy plans.

    Compare before you connect

Connecting with Origin Energy means you start on an Origin Energy plan. Compare what is available at the new address first, then book the connection. It is free, and the move-in is arranged in the same step.

How to connect with Origin Energy

    1. 1

Decide whether the property is a move (meter already there) or a new connection (no supply yet). Origin's new-connection pages are the ones to use for a build.

    2. 2

Compare plans for the new address before you book. Origin will connect whichever plan you choose with them, which is not the same as checking the rest of the market.

    3. 3

Book the move with the new address and move-in date. Origin says the exact distributor fee is shown at that step.

    4. 4

If you need power the same day, Origin says to call rather than rely on the online form, and to expect that an extra fee may apply.

    Origin Energy connection fee

Origin's moving page says connection fees when you move in are determined by the distributor, appear on the Origin bill, and are shown when you book online. Same-day electricity connection is arranged by phone, and Origin says additional fees may apply. The dollar amount is being verified against Origin's current moving-fee table.

How long Origin Energy says it takes

Origin points same-day electricity connections to its phone line and says extra fees may apply. It does not publish a single national timeframe for a standard move or for a new connection. A new meter installation is a separate, longer job. Treat any specific number of days as being verified until it is copied from Origin's page with a date.

    Frequently asked questions

    • What is an Origin Energy new connection?

Origin uses "new connection" for a property that needs electricity for the first time, such as a new build. Moving into an existing home, where the meter is already there, is a reconnection. The fees and the time are not the same.

    • How much does Origin charge to connect electricity when you move?

Origin says the distributor sets the fee and that the amount is shown when you book the move. We have not published a dollar figure here. It is being verified against Origin's moving-fee page.

    • Can Origin connect electricity on the same day?

Origin's moving page says to call for a same-day electricity connection, and that additional fees may apply. It is not offered as a guaranteed online option. Checked 15 October 2026.
